May 9th is election day in BC. Have you voted yet?
We have an opportunity to make change a reality in BC. As an elected member of Council of Tsleil-Waututh Nation I do my best everyday to listen to members of my community. Now we have the chance to elect a new government that will ensure our voice is heard by the BC government. My vote matters, and yours does, too.
There are so many reasons to vote to stop Kinder Morgan. We have created a series of web pages with information for you about specific concerns we hope you will consider on election day.
For the health and safety of children and the well-being of future generations
Your vote affects salmon. It affects the economy. It affects what we do about climate change. And it affects Tsleil-Waututh Nation and all indigenous people who are defending their ancestral territory.
These days, I think about my grandfather Chief Dan George a lot. But now more than ever, his words resonate deeply with me. Recently I’ve been thinking about a particular line he wrote. Maybe you’ve read it before but it’s worth revisiting.
The time will soon be here when my grandchild will long for the cry of a loon, the flash of a salmon, the whisper of spruce needles, or the screech of an eagle. But he will not make friends with any of these creatures and when his heart aches with longing, he will curse me. Have I done all to keep the air fresh? Have I cared enough about the water? Have I left the eagle to soar in freedom? Have I done everything I could to earn my grandchild’s fondness?
Your vote matters and can make a difference.
If you’d like to know more about how your vote affects issues you care about, I urge you to read more here.
This election may be our last chance to get the Kinder Morgan pipeline cancelled by the provincial government. If enough of us vote, we can stop Kinder Morgan once and for all.
Instead of spending our precious time and energy on fighting this dangerous project, we could be building a sustainable economy together.
Tomorrow I’ll send you a reminder as to go out and vote and encourage your loved ones and colleagues, neighbours and community members to vote too.
