Choose Our Children – Not the Kinder Morgan Pipeline

We Have the Chance to Defend Our Children’s Health and Future by Stopping the Proposed Kinder Morgan Pipeline.

What price would you put on your child’s health? What about their future?

What Does Kinder Morgan Have to do With Our Children’s Wellbeing?

By expanding the tar sands and adding more pipelines and tankers to our province and the waters off of our coast, we are putting our children at direct risk. There is the risk of an oil spill which would affect both the air that they breathe and the water that they use as their playground and upon which many families make their livings.  And there is also the immense risk that will come from climate change, the largest global health threat to children in the 21st century.

Millions of children around the world will be at increased risk for disease, malnutrition, water scarcity, disasters, and the collapse of public services and infrastructure. No one will be immune to the effects of climate change, but the largest group to be affected will be children. In fact Save the Children says climate change is the single biggest threat facing children today.

Kinder Morgan 101

Houston-based Kinder Morgan (formerly Enron Liquid Pipelines) is one of the largest fossil fuel companies in the world.

The company intends to build a new 1,100 km export pipeline for a dangerous kind of oil called diluted bitumen. The route would be carved out from Northern Alberta to Vancouver’s Burrard Inlet. It culminates at the ocean where massive tankers will transport the oil across the world.

The proposed pipeline would increase the amount of hazardous crude oil traveling through British Columbia’s water more than seven times: from approximately 60 tankers a year to over 400.

What Does Kinder Morgan Have to do With Our Children’s Future?

When we think about our children’s future, we should also be thinking about what kind of jobs we want them to be able to look forward to and what kind of environment we want them to inherit – clean sustainable land and water or a toxic, carcinogenic Inlet with little or no opportunity for restoration?

If the Kinder Morgan pipeline is built it will bring with it an increased risk for our health, our environment, and our jobs. Meanwhile, we have an opportunity to be leaders in making the jobs of tomorrow a reality today. Already more people in the United States and Canada work in renewable energy than work in fossil fuels so why are we doubling down on the economic strategy of yesterday?

Remember when you felt hopeful for the future?

It’s time to accept that if we want our children to have that opportunity, it is up to us to choose their future and not choose this pipeline.

The alternative to meeting climate change head on is a future where our children will ask “what did you do to try to stop this from happening?” With all that we know, it is incumbent upon us as parents, grandparents, aunts, and uncles to act now.

Why did the NEB approve the Kinder Morgan pipeline if its economic impact is negative? Acoustic disturbance: Increased tanker traffic will cause acoustic disruption underwater, and cause marine animals to change their behaviour -- especially culturally important species such as whales and blackfish. For more information, see our page on the pipeline's impacts on whales.
How would Orcas be impacted by the proposed Kinder Morgan pipeline? Marine Mammals, including orca, are at risk in the event of an oil spill: Southern resident killer whales in British Columbia are considered endangered species, while northern whales are considered threatened but recovery plans in place are weak. Many marine mammals, including orca reside in or visit Burrard Inlet.
Would the proposed Kinder Morgan pipeline affect fish, birds, and wildlife? Fish, birds, and other wildlife are in the immediate path of harm in the event of any oil spill, major or minor. Here's how: Any marine birds near an oil spill risk oiling and probable death. A major spill could result in one of the top bird mortality events ever caused by oil.
What would the impact of an oil spill in Burrard Inlet be? Every inch of Burrard Inlet, including the Indian Arm, would likely be affected by an oil spill. Such an incident would also affect Tsleil-Waututh cultural activities. Within 48 hours, 90% of the oil would strand on our beaches and foul up to 25 kilometres of shoreline ...
